Anthropic Revamps Claude Usage Limits, Mirroring Electricity Load Shifting
To meet increasing user demand and better balance system load, Anthropic announced on March 26, 2026, that it is adjusting the usage limits for Claude .
The new rules introduce a peak/off-peak pricing model similar to electricity grids: during high-traffic hours, conversations cost more in terms of quota consumption. This economic incentive encourages users to spread out their usage, helping maintain service stability during peak loads.
Peak-hour quota consumption accelerates, affecting 7% of subscribers
According to Anthropic technical team member Thariq Shihipar , the change primarily impacts free, Pro, and Max subscribers.
During peak hours—5:00 to 11:00 AM Pacific Time (8:00 PM to 2:00 AM Beijing Time)—Claude 's five-hour session limit is effectively reduced: the same action uses more quota than during off-peak times. Official estimates suggest about 7% of users—particularly heavy Token users on the Pro plan—will see the limit warning sooner than before.

Weekly total quota stays the same: developers encouraged to move tasks offline
Although real-time quota allocation shifts throughout the day, Anthropic stresses that the weekly total limit per user remains unchanged.
Anthropic recommends that developers running large Token-consuming background tasks—like extensive code refactoring or long document analysis—schedule them during off-peak hours to make the most of their session quota. This change highlights that AI compute resources remain tight, and providers are moving from blanket restrictions to more nuanced traffic management to boost overall hardware efficiency.
