Anthropic in talks with Samsung over custom chip

In April, Reuters reported that Anthropic was exploring the possibility of developing its own AI chips to address chip shortages. Now, the company appears to be taking that idea more seriously.
On Thursday, The Information reported that Anthropic had been in talks with Samsung about a potential collaboration on the upcoming chip. However, according to the report, Anthropic has not yet determined the chip's intended use, how it would integrate into servers, or its performance specifications.
When asked for comment, Anthropic told TechCrunch that a diverse hardware stack—including chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia—will remain essential to its computing strategy. Regarding a possible Samsung partnership, the company declined to provide further details.
Many AI companies have pursued custom chip development, both to create specialized hardware for specific computing tasks and to reduce reliance on Nvidia, which continues to dominate the chip industry.
Anthropic's move may also respond to a recent announcement from its key competitor, OpenAI, which partnered with Broadcom to unveil its own custom inference processor, named "Jalapeño." OpenAI claims the chip offers better performance-per-watt than competing processors. Amazon and Google already offer custom-built TPUs as part of their cloud services.
Samsung is already deeply involved in the AI sector, serving as a major partner to Nvidia by producing chips needed for training and running AI models. In return, Samsung uses Nvidia's software to manufacture its chips. The two companies are jointly building an AI chip factory in South Korea. Samsung has also explored partnering with Google on chip manufacturing.
