AI-Generated Books Flood Amazon, Squeezing Human Authors

Analysis of 14,000 self-published e-books on Amazon reveals that AI-generated content is reshaping the publishing industry through sheer volume. From early 2023 to Q1 2026, Amazon’s catalog grew 38.3 times, while quarterly revenue increased only 8.9 times. This disparity creates a "dilution effect," where more books compete for a stagnant revenue pool.
Even non-AI books are affected, with income per book declining in seven of eight major genres. AI content represents 20% of the catalog but contributes only 12.1% and 11.3% to sales and revenue, respectively. Despite this, AI works make up 31% of new Top 25 bestsellers, challenging the dominance of traditional books.
Some prolific authors have significantly boosted output using AI, with a few earning millions from just a handful of books. Best-selling AI books exhibit high overlap with existing works, relying heavily on rare expressions rather than typical literary styles.
Industry experts view this study as crucial evidence for ongoing AI copyright lawsuits. While AI companies previously argued that human reading and learning justify their practices, this data on market dilution and linguistic overlap could significantly impact future judicial decisions on fair use.
