AI Chip Startup Etched Valued at $5 Billion Lands $1 Billion Order for First Inference System
Etched, a prominent rival to NVIDIA in the AI chip sector, has officially launched from stealth, unveiling its latest progress. The company’s proprietary chip system, produced by TSMC earlier this year, has already landed a $1 billion contract.
Named the "Frontier Inference Cluster," this solution combines custom silicon, server racks, and integrated software, and is currently undergoing customer trials. Built to tackle the primary cost barrier for AI providers serving large-scale clients, the system delivers superior performance for cutting-edge models compared to general-purpose GPUs, while drastically lowering energy usage and expenses through hardware-level optimization.
Established in 2022, Etched also disclosed a $500 million private funding round completed last December, pushing its total capital raised to $800 million and boosting its valuation to $5 billion. Stripes led the investment, joined by VentureTech Alliance, Jane Street, and notable industry figures including Andrej Karpathy, Geoffrey Hinton, Fei-Fei Li, and Peter Thiel.
