3 Artists Reimagine AI Imagery Using Speculative Photography

In early 2024, Google's Envisioning Studio embarked on a fascinating project titled "Alternative Images of AI," inviting three talented artists—Farah Al Qasimi, Charlie Engman, and Max Pinckers—to delve into the world of AI through photography. The goal? To craft a collection that moves beyond the typical, often oversimplified images of AI, and instead focuses on human experiences and our evolving relationships with this transformative technology.
The Need for Alternative Images of AI
You've probably seen the usual suspects when it comes to AI imagery—those ubiquitous illustrations of chips, neural networks, and robots. Sure, they're everywhere, but they barely scratch the surface of what AI truly is. These images can reinforce misconceptions and fail to capture the full spectrum of AI's potential and challenges. As AI becomes a bigger part of our daily lives, it's crucial to think about how these visuals shape our understanding and interaction with the tech. With "Alternative Images of AI," we wanted to team up with artists to explore how photography could offer a fresh perspective on AI, helping people connect with it in new ways.
The “Alternative Images of AI” Exhibition
The "Alternative Images of AI" exhibition is a breath of fresh air, showcasing 15 unique photographs that offer diverse, global views on AI. You can catch this exhibition at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City until January 6, 2025, or dive into it online right here.
Farah, Charlie, and Max embraced speculative photography, which involves staged scenes and digital manipulation, to capture images from the United Arab Emirates, Ghana, and Belgium, respectively. We chose these photographers for their knack for blending reality with fiction, and we posed a fundamental question to them: What kind of relationships do we want to build with AI-powered technologies today and in the future?
AI is often portrayed as something invisible or impossible to photograph. These artworks serve as reflections of society, illustrating how each artist envisioned different communities engaging with AI. Our aim is to spark meaningful public conversations about how AI interactions might affect our emotions and thoughts.
Farah Al Qasimi
Farah Al Qasimi's approach is all about exploring how AI can help us connect with the natural world and each other in ways that go beyond words. Her work, captured in Abu Dhabi, doesn't overplay AI's presence but rather delves into how it might enable us to forge deeper connections beyond the confines of a screen.
In Farah's "Aquarium," a man gazes at his pet cockatoo and fish, using AI to better understand their needs. "My practice really begins with truth, but then it kind of expands outward into different, playful forms of fiction and storytelling," Farah explains.
Charlie Engman
Charlie Engman explores how AI could tackle social and environmental issues in Accra, Ghana, home to the bustling Kantamanto Market, one of the world's largest secondhand clothing markets. In January 2024, Charlie engaged with the local community, discussing AI's potential impact on their daily lives, particularly around waste colonialism and global commerce. His images suggest how AI systems might address these challenges across Accra. To create these speculative visuals, Charlie used the generative AI tool Midjourney, prompted by his on-location photographs.
In "Kantamanto Registry," Charlie's AI model acts as an inventory for material goods and resources. "When I was approached for this project, I was thinking about what the future of AI was and what AI might mean to the world in general," Charlie says. "I realized that a lot of the discourse and a lot of my own thinking around AI were trapped in a sort of bubble. I felt the discourse was quite repetitive and it was excluding a lot of different aspects of the world that I was interested in."
Max Pinckers
Max Pinckers mixes everyday scenes with speculative elements and surreal touches, creating a space where AI's presence is both tangible and mysterious. His work, shot in Belgium, invites viewers into a world where the boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred, prompting us to think about AI's evolving role in our perceptions of the external world.
In "Double Take," Max's twins symbolize the AI model mirroring a person. "My first thought was: How can we make photographs that play with a certain realism when we look at them, that don't immediately land in a fully fictitious world, but that represent the presence of AI as a part of our everyday environment?" Max reflects.
The Future of AI Imagery
Looking beyond this exhibition, creating more accurate and nuanced images of AI will take time and a collective effort. We believe that speculative imagery of AI can ignite critical reflection and foster constructive dialogue. To learn more, check out the exhibition on Google Arts & Culture.
