Meta CTO Touts 2025 as Pivotal Year for AR and VR

Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Meta's Chief Technology Officer and one of its first 15 engineers, released an internal memo earlier this year predicting 2025 would be a defining year for Reality Labs, the company's augmented and virtual reality division. He forecast it would either be remembered as a year of spectacular achievement or go down as a "legendary misadventure" for the metaverse.
Currently, Boz seems increasingly optimistic about its potential for success. Ultimately, however, the market will be the final judge.
"We'll make a final assessment at the end of the decade, but this certainly feels like the pivotal year," Boz stated during a Bloomberg Technology interview on Thursday.
Boz highlighted that Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have been a breakthrough, generating significant interest from both consumers and competitors. Since their launch in October 2023, Meta has sold over two million units as of February. Remarkably, they outsold traditional Ray-Bans even before the AI features were widely released last fall.
In a related development, Google announced partnerships last month with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop smart glasses using the Android XR platform. Apple is also reportedly accelerating efforts to launch its own smart glasses in 2026.
"We've suddenly transitioned from working in relative obscurity to having a highly desirable product in the market, which naturally attracts competitors," Boz remarked. "The race is officially on. The progress we make this year carries significantly more weight than any year before the competitive landscape solidifies."
He also noted that competition among existing players becomes irrelevant if the market doesn't embrace Meta's AR and VR products, as widespread adoption is necessary to establish industry-wide technological standards.

He mentioned this was a key lesson he learned from Sheryl Sandberg, Meta's former Chief Operating Officer.
"Sheryl often said that most companies fail not because they were out-competed, but because they failed to execute their own plans effectively," Boz recalled. "That's why I constantly remind our team to focus less on what competitors are doing and more on whether we are delivering to our own high standards."
The Meta CTO confirmed the company has "a set of ambitious plans for the year" and is on track to achieve them.
"By the end of this year, we'll know if we successfully executed our plan," said Boz. "What we'll know in five years is whether that execution was enough to secure long-term success."
