Anthropic is finalizing negotiations with NTT DATA to build its first overseas data center in Osaka Japan. The 500MW facility will cost over one trillion yen and is expected to be partially operational by 2028. This strategic move secures a long-term computing base in Japan. Notably the center will initially use behind-the-meter power generation via fuel cells rather than relying on the external grid. This pragmatic approach allows Anthropic to establish operations while local infrastructure catches up. The project underscores the company's commitment to controlling its own computing lifeline and highlights the growing challenges of securing electricity for AI infrastructure globally.
