Zoom Launches VR Video Calls with New Meta Quest App

Zoom Launches Dedicated Quest VR App

Zoom has introduced a standalone virtual reality application for Meta Quest headsets, enabling users to participate in or host meetings while represented by their Meta Avatar. This marks a significant upgrade from the previous integrated experience.

Enhanced Accessibility

The new app removes previous limitations – unlike the 2023 version that required access through Meta's Horizon Workspaces and a Zoom subscription for hosting meetings, the standalone version works with any Zoom account, including free tiers. The application supports all current Quest models including the Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest Pro, and Quest 2.

Meeting Interface Flexibility

Participants can view others on the call regardless of whether they're using Zoom's desktop, mobile, or web applications. Meta's passthrough technology is also supported on newer headsets (Quest 3, 3S, and Pro), allowing users to maintain awareness of their physical surroundings during VR meetings.

AI Integration and Avatar Technology

This release aligns with Zoom's broader initiative to incorporate AI avatars into its platform. Following last year's introduction of visionOS personas for Apple Vision Pro users and subsequent AI avatar messaging features, the VR integration represents another step toward virtual meeting representation.

Practical Applications

The standalone VR app provides new possibilities for:

Remote collaboration in immersive environments
Virtual presentations using personalized avatars
Hybrid meetings combining VR and traditional formats
