YouTube is introducing Lens to Shorts. This feature, launching in beta over the coming weeks, allows you to look up additional details about animals, plants, or objects you see in a video.
For instance, if you're watching a Short that features a landmark in the background, YouTube states you can use Lens to search for that specific landmark and learn more about the filming location.
To use this feature, open Shorts within YouTube’s mobile app. Once you pause a Short, tap the Lens button in the top menu, then circle, highlight, or tap the item you wish to search. YouTube will then display visual matches and search results overlaid on the Short. The platform mentions that selecting any of these results lets you "quickly return to the content you were watching."
Google has been expanding Lens recently; it now supports video-based searches and can even assist with in-store purchasing decisions.
YouTube clarifies that while Lens does not use "biometric facial recognition" to identify individuals, it may provide results for "notable public figures." Additionally, no ads will appear in results during the pilot phase, and the feature will not be available on Shorts containing shopping affiliate links initially.
