Windsurf Slashes Prices Amid Intensifying Competition with Cursor

Windsurf Slashes Prices Amidst Growing Competition with Cursor

In a bold move to stay competitive, AI coding assistant startup Windsurf announced significant price reductions across its services on Monday. The company is aiming to offer "massive savings" to its users as it intensifies its rivalry with Cursor.

Windsurf is simplifying its pricing model by eliminating its previous "flow action credits" system, which charged developers for background actions performed by its AI. This change aims to make the pricing more transparent and user-friendly. Additionally, Windsurf is reducing the cost of its team plans from $35 to $30 per user per month, and it claims its enterprise plans are now "much cheaper."

Rob Hou, a product marketer at Windsurf, took to X (formerly Twitter) to declare that Windsurf now boasts "BY FAR the best and most affordable pricing structure of all AI coding tools on the market." He attributed this to the company's optimization of GPU usage. Hou also took a swipe at competitors with "confusing" plans priced at $20 per month, seemingly targeting Cursor's individual plan, which starts at $20, while Windsurf's is now at $15.

This pricing overhaul comes at a time when Windsurf is reportedly in discussions for a potential $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI. Meanwhile, Cursor's parent company, Anysphere, is negotiating a funding round that could value it at $10 billion. As reported by TechCrunch, Windsurf, with an annual recurring revenue of about $100 million, is smaller than Cursor, which generates $300 million. Interestingly, OpenAI had initially considered acquiring Cursor, but its rapid growth has taken it out of the acquisition market.

While Windsurf has not officially confirmed the acquisition talks with OpenAI, it has been increasingly visible in its collaborations with the AI giant. For instance, Windsurf's CEO, Varun Mohan, featured prominently in OpenAI's recent launch video for its new API model family. Alongside the pricing changes, Windsurf is offering its users a week of free and unlimited access to OpenAI's latest models, GPT-4.1 and o4-mini.

The industry is now watching closely to see if Cursor will respond to Windsurf's price cuts. A price war could ensue, potentially making it challenging for both startups to achieve profitable growth.

Windsurf, which chose not to comment further on this article, reiterated in its announcement its commitment to passing savings back to its users, a promise it has held since its inception.

Anysphere, the creator of Cursor, did not reply to requests for comment.
