WeChat Boosts AI Features and Tightens Video Content Moderation

Recently, the WeChat platform issued an announcement (Issue 6) concerning the governance of "AI-altered" videos. This initiative aims to strengthen oversight of inappropriate content and uphold a healthy order in online information dissemination. The measure aligns with directives from the National Radio and Television Administration, seeking to curb the misuse of AI tools by some accounts to make subversive modifications to classic television dramas and animated works.
Platform content reviews have identified accounts illegally posting "AI-altered" videos with harmful narratives. These videos distort the original intent of classic works, maliciously deconstruct mainstream values, and misrepresent stories of historical figures and role models, thereby misleading youth and undermining public sentiment. Furthermore, some videos have inappropriately altered animated characters familiar to minors into taboo or horror-themed content.
In accordance with relevant national laws and regulations, as well as the "Tencent WeChat Software License and Service Agreement" and the "WeChat Video Account Operation Standards," the platform has enforced strict measures against these violations. As of March 2026, the WeChat platform has addressed 3,800 instances of non-compliant short video content and suspended one related account. This governance action reflects the platform's commitment to safeguarding the online environment and protecting user rights.
WeChat also calls on all content creators to exercise greater self-discipline and collaborate in maintaining a clear and wholesome online ecosystem. As governance of "AI-altered" videos continues, the platform will further enhance its oversight capabilities to ensure rigorous action against non-compliant content and accounts, thereby preserving a positive experience for all users.
Examples of Removed Content:
1. AI-altered versions of classic films and series such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "Water Margin," which distort the original narratives, subvert character portrayals, and maliciously deconstruct mainstream values;
2. AI-altered stories about historical figures and role models, which distort history, disrespect heroes, mislead youth, and harm national sentiment;
3. AI-altered versions of animated characters familiar to minors, featuring malicious, taboo, or horror-themed content.
