Tsinghua AIR and Shuimu Molecules Open Source General-Purpose Chemical AI Model BioMedGPT-Mol

Domestic large models are rapidly evolving from general-purpose chatbots into domain-specific experts at the cutting edge of AI and biopharmaceuticals.
Recently, Tsinghua University's Institute for Intelligent Manufacturing (AIR) and Shuimu Molecular jointly open-sourced BioMedGPT-Mol, a general foundation model for chemical molecules. This milestone reflects a major push by research institutions and innovative companies toward smarter, more standardized drug development.
Designed as a large language model for chemical molecule design, BioMedGPT-Mol stands out for its universal representation ability. Unlike earlier fragmented AI approaches, it interprets complex molecular structures, chemical bonds, and physicochemical properties with the same fluency humans bring to language, exhibiting strong generalization across downstream tasks like drug screening, property prediction, and molecular generation.
Institute for Intelligent Manufacturing at Tsinghua University (AIR) has long focused on applying AI to industrial challenges, while Shuimu Molecular brings deep expertise in biopharmaceutical large models. By open-sourcing this model, they aim to offer researchers worldwide a high-quality foundation, reduce the entry barrier for AI in chemistry, and accelerate the traditionally lengthy drug development timeline.
