On June 12, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Alibaba Tongyi Qianwen App introduced a football prediction AI assistant available to all users. The assistant showed impressive accuracy from day one, correctly forecasting the 2-0 scoreline and red card trend in the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, as well as predicting South Korea's dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic in the final minutes. Netizens quickly called it the "octopus" of the AI era.
Cheng Fei, product manager for Tongyi Qianwen's AI prediction system, explained that the assistant is trained on massive datasets. In addition to historical match records and player statistics, it uniquely incorporates geographic features, altitude, and weather data from the host locations. For the opening match, for example, the model fully accounted for how Mexico City's elevation of over 2,200 meters affected the visiting team.
The development team emphasized that while AI aims to approach the limits of accuracy through technological optimization, the true appeal of football lies in its unpredictability. On the commercial side, the product moves beyond traditional betting models. Users can win cash prizes worth tens of thousands of yuan, and also engage with Tongyi Qianwen's interactive mechanisms to help build football fields for rural schools—creating a deep integration of cutting-edge AI technology, sports competition, and social welfare.
