Tencent Launches Personal Agent Code-named Handy Bot for Covert WeChat Testing

Tencent is reportedly working behind the scenes on a Personal AI Agent product, internally dubbed "Handy Bot," with plans to release it as a standalone app. The service has already quietly appeared on WeChat, where its account description identifies it as "Your Personal AI Agent."
Handy Bot takes a fundamentally different approach than conventional chatbots. While traditional bots operate on a simple question-and-answer model, ending tasks once the conversation concludes, a Personal Agent is designed for "background presence." Users simply set a broad objective, and the AI autonomously progresses the task in the cloud, eliminating the need for step-by-step human instructions.
Meta’s recent launch of Muse marks a significant milestone in this area. Its core architecture assigns each user a dedicated, secure virtual machine to manage routine tasks like price comparisons, email management, and schedule monitoring.
Tencent isn’t the only tech giant exploring this space. Alibaba is shifting Qwen toward "My Qwen," focusing on building personal context memory, while Douyin’s Duanbao is reportedly developing a personal assistant codenamed "Spell." Industry experts agree that for Personal Agents to succeed, they must balance advanced task planning, open ecosystem tools, and strict privacy compliance. Currently, Handy Bot remains in internal testing, with final product details yet to be announced.
