Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg expressed his opposition to the use of AI technology in creative pursuits during an interview at the SXSW conference in Austin on Friday. When asked about his perspective on AI's role in filmmaking, Spielberg stated, "I have never utilized AI in any of my films," a remark that drew cheers and applause from the audience.
The director, producer, and screenwriter, renowned for blockbusters such as "Jaws," "E.T.," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Raiders of the Lost Ark," is not inherently opposed to technology. His own filmography explores technologically rich worlds, both utopian and dystopian, as seen in "Minority Report," "Ready Player One," and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence."
At SXSW 2026, Spielberg clarified that he did not intend to deliver a full critique of AI, acknowledging its value in many fields. However, he emphasized that in his writers' rooms, even for television, "there is no empty chair with a laptop," meaning he does not delegate creative work to machines.
"I do not support AI if it aims to replace a creative individual," he affirmed.
While a filmmaker of Spielberg's stature may not require AI assistance, AI startups are actively marketing their tools to independent filmmakers with limited resources. Concurrently, major streaming platforms are exploring AI integration. Amazon has announced it is testing AI tools for film and TV production this year, and Netflix recently acquired Ben Affleck's AI filmmaking company for an estimated $600 million.
