Spotify Developers Embrace AI to Replace Manual Coding, Boosting Productivity

During Spotify's fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Gustav Söderström disclosed that since December 2025, the company's senior developers have not manually written any code. Instead, all code is generated by AI, with engineers supervising the AI-generated output. Söderström sees this as a promising development for the industry.
It is reported that Spotify has rolled out an internal development system named "Honk," which incorporates generative AI technologies like Claude Code. This system enables real-time remote code generation, debugging, and deployment, fundamentally transforming the development workflow. Engineers can issue instructions to the AI via Slack from their mobile phones during commutes, completing tasks such as fixing iOS app vulnerabilities and adding new features. New versions can be pushed directly to the platform, allowing engineers to finalize releases before they even arrive at the office. This approach frees developers from repetitive coding tasks, enabling them to focus on creative design and requirement management.
In his address to investors, Söderström emphasized that the advancement of artificial intelligence is an inevitable trend, not a matter of choice. While the shift to AI-driven development has presented some challenges, Spotify is committed to fully embracing this transformation. This model has already yielded initial results: in 2025, Spotify completed over 50 new features and product changes using AI toolchains, showcasing the core productive value of AI in software development.
