Spotify, the leading music streaming platform, recently reached a landmark licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG). According to The Guardian, this deal will allow Spotify Premium subscribers to use AI technology to create covers and remixes of songs from licensed artists for the first time.
This new feature is expected to launch as a paid add‑on for Spotify Premium members. Fans will not only be able to stream music but also get hands‑on with adapting classic tracks from top stars like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, or Billie Eilish.
Turning Fan Creations into Real Money
Spotify stated that this AI creation tool significantly enriches community interaction while opening up additional revenue streams for musicians and creators beyond traditional royalties. Fan‑generated works will be directly tied to artists' commercial earnings through legally authorized AI channels.
Although the two parties have not yet disclosed specific financial sharing terms or the full list of artists initially joining the licensing program, Universal Music’s copyright catalog—as one of the largest record companies globally—will undoubtedly provide a vast music library for this feature.
