SpaceX Becomes Key Driver of Open-Source AI with $6.3B Super Order, Inheriting xAI's Computing Power
Open-source AI lab Reflection AI has secured a computing power lease agreement with SpaceX to speed up the development of advanced open-weight models. Under the deal, Reflection AI will pay $150 million per month from July 1, 2026, through 2029, gaining immediate access to the Colossus2 data center near Memphis, Tennessee — operated by SpaceX — to utilize NVIDIA's latest GB300 AI chips and supporting infrastructure. The agreement is valued at $6.3 billion, and either party can terminate the contract with 90 days' notice after the first three months.
With the original Colossus data center, once owned by xAI, now integrated into SpaceX and xAI's internal R&D pace slowing, SpaceX is accelerating monetization of its valuable AI chip inventory. It had previously secured monthly compute power deals with Anthropic for $125 million and with Google for $92 million, respectively. Reflection AI — a startup founded in 2024 by two former Google DeepMind researchers — is making one of the largest infrastructure commitments in open-source AI to date.
After the U.S. government's recent ban on Anthropic's proprietary models Fable and Mythos, growing concerns over the risks and costs of relying exclusively on closed models have opened a critical development window for publicly trainable open-weight models. This top-tier compute support gives Reflection AI additional time for large-scale training as it competes with closed frontier labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI, potentially reshaping the market dynamics of the frontier AI landscape.
