Sora's New Update Delivers Pet AI Videos, Social Tools, and an Upcoming Android App

OpenAI is previewing a wave of new features for its breakout AI video creation app, Sora, which rapidly climbed to the top of the App Store following its launch in late September. The app, still holding the number one spot in the U.S. and Canada, will soon add video editing capabilities, let users create character "cameos" of their pets and other items, enhance social functions, and more. The company also confirms the Android version is "actually coming soon."
Sora lead Bill Peebles announced the news on X, stating these new creative tools will be available within days. One key feature allows users to transform pets, cherished stuffed animals, and virtually any other object into digital cameos.
sora roadmap update: in the spirit of building this app openly, here's what we're landing soon.
first, more creation tools. character cameos are coming in the next few days: you'll be able to cameo your dog, guinea pig, favorite stuffed toy, and pretty much anything else you… pic.twitter.com/GX7CJXWRcZ

In Sora, a "cameo" is an AI persona users can create by uploading a short video of themselves as a reference. These AI characters can then be shared, enabling friends to generate videos featuring your digital likeness.
"We anticipate users will create a wide variety of imaginative cameos with this feature. To help discovery, we're updating the interface to display the latest trending cameos in real-time," Peebles posted on X.
He also mentioned the app will get basic video editing, beginning with the ability to combine multiple clips. More advanced tools will follow. An improved social experience is in development, introducing new ways to collaborate with friends on Sora. This could include dedicated channels for universities, companies, sports clubs, and other groups.
OpenAI is also addressing user feedback, working to relax what some consider overly strict content moderation and to boost the app's overall performance.
While the app is available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, a specific launch date for Android has not been announced. Peebles only indicated it should be available "soon," without providing further details.
