Samsung's Ballie could soon be the brainiest gadget scooting around your home. Today, the tech giant shared exciting news about teaming up with Google to integrate Google Cloud's generative AI into its Ballie AI companion robot. This partnership is set to make Ballie even smarter and more helpful in your daily life.
If you're new to the Ballie scene, let me catch you up. This little robot, roughly the size of a basketball, debuted at CES 2020. Think of it as a roving, upgraded version of Alexa. Ballie can do it all: from tweaking your home's lights and temperature to chatting with your smart appliances. It can even keep an eye on your pets or family members with video updates, project movies or websites onto your walls, play your favorite tunes, and handle phone calls.
Last year, ZDNET's Senior Editor Sabrina Ortiz got a firsthand look at Ballie and was quite impressed. She described it as "a serious attempt at creating a robot assistant without overreaching." According to Sabrina, Ballie has the potential to take over the roles of various smart devices in your home, including projectors, robot dogs, security cameras, and smart home hubs.
With Google's AI now in the mix, Ballie steps up its game. It can now chat with you, tailor your daily schedule, smartly control your home gadgets, set reminders, and even welcome you at the door.
Yongjae Kim, Samsung Electronics' Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business, is thrilled about this collaboration. He believes it will enable Ballie to follow you around, predict what you need, and engage more interactively.
Samsung says Ballie will use voice and audio inputs, along with visual data from its camera and environmental cues, to adapt on the fly. Imagine asking Ballie, "How do I look?" before heading out, and it responds with outfit suggestions. That's the kind of real-time assistance we're talking about.
Beyond that, Ballie can also take care of your health and well-being. If you mention feeling tired, Ballie might offer tips on better sleep or suggest some exercise to boost your energy.
While Ballie is set to hit the market this summer, Samsung's keeping the price under wraps for now. It'll be interesting to see how this smart little robot fits into our homes and lives.
