Samsung to Supply OpenAI With HBM4, Challenging NVIDIA’s AI Dominance

To eliminate dependence on NVIDIA’s computing infrastructure, OpenAI is rapidly expanding its proprietary hardware operations, positioning South Korean semiconductor leader Samsung as a key partner.
According to recent reports from the Korean Economic Daily, Samsung Electronics intends to provide its next-generation high-bandwidth memory HBM4 chips to OpenAI . These premium memory modules will be integrated into OpenAI 's inaugural in-house AI processor, signaling the ChatGPT creator’s strategic shift from software dominance to hardware innovation.
Strategic Goals of the "Star Gate" Initiative
This partnership stems from long-term planning. Last year, Samsung signed a memorandum of understanding to back OpenAI 's ambitious "Star Gate" (Stargate) project. As global large language model parameters expand exponentially, demand for high-bandwidth memory has surged, making Samsung 's HBM4 essential for overcoming self-developed chip limitations.
Collaborative Structure: Broadcom Design, TSMC Fabrication
Industry sources indicate that OpenAI 's first custom AI chip was developed in collaboration with Broadcom and will be manufactured by TSMC. The delivery schedule is as follows:
Supply Volume: Samsung aims to deliver up to 8 billion Gb of 12-layer HBM4 chips in the second half of this year.
Production Schedule: TSMC is expected to begin manufacturing in the third quarter, with a target launch by the end of 2026.
Samsung's Broader Strategy: Collaborating with AMD to Compete
Beyond OpenAI , Samsung is broadening its AI ecosystem. On Wednesday, Samsung Electronics signed a strategic cooperation agreement with AMD, confirming its role as the primary HBM4 supplier for AMD 's upcoming AI graphics processing unit (GPU).
By securing major clients like OpenAI and AMD , Samsung is establishing a strong position in the AI memory sector. When OpenAI 's custom chips are combined with Samsung 's fastest memory, the global AI computing landscape could undergo a significant transformation by 2026.
