Samsung Lands Major Anthropic Order, AI Chip Manufacturing Gains Momentum

Samsung Foundry has secured a chip manufacturing deal with AI startup Anthropic, a move that could breathe new life into its foundry business and help reverse recent financial struggles.
Anthropic has become a key player in the AI industry with its advanced models. As the AI chip market grows more concentrated, major companies like NVIDIA, Google, OpenAI, and Amazon are racing to develop their own chips. In this landscape, Anthropic's partnership with Samsung stands out. Sources say the collaboration is expected to boost Samsung's foundry business and set it on a recovery path.
The collaboration traces back to Anthropic's Series H funding round in May, where it announced strategic partners including memory giants Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. Anthropic said these partners would help expand its computing capabilities in a customer-oriented way. Analysts note that Samsung, with its non-memory chip manufacturing capabilities, is the most likely to win the order.
In addition to the Anthropic deal, Samsung has made progress on another major project—Tesla's AI5 chip has entered the tape-out phase. Tape-out is the final step in chip design, where the design layout is handed over to the foundry for production. A senior engineer at Samsung Foundry confirmed on LinkedIn that the AI5 chip will be produced at the Taylor factory using a 2nm process and will soon be used in Tesla's new products.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has praised the chip, saying its performance will rival NVIDIA's flagship products while offering advantages in manufacturing cost and energy efficiency. As orders from Anthropic and Tesla move forward, Samsung Foundry is striving to re-establish itself in the competitive advanced process market.
