Sam Altman: OpenAI's Capacity Issues to Delay Products

In a series of posts on X on Monday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that the high demand for the company's new image-generation tool in ChatGPT is leading to some product delays. He explained, "We're working to manage things, but expect delays in new releases from OpenAI, some features might not work as expected, and the service might be slower at times as we tackle these capacity issues. We're doing our best to get everything running smoothly as quickly as possible."
The launch of OpenAI's image-generation feature was met with both excitement and debate, especially for its ability to mimic styles such as Studio Ghibli's hand-drawn animation. Over the weekend, Altman shared on X that the company has been struggling to keep up since the launch, with staff pulling late nights and working weekends just to keep the service running.
Altman also revealed that ChatGPT gained a million new users in just one hour on Monday. The platform now boasts 500 million weekly users and 20 million paying subscribers, a significant increase from the 300 million users and 15.5 million subscribers it had by the end of 2024.
To address the capacity challenges, OpenAI has postponed the rollout of the image-generation tool for free ChatGPT users and temporarily halted video generation for new users of Sora, their suite of generative AI media tools.
