Project Hail Mary Trailer: Ryan Gosling Awakens in Space
Following the massive success of The Martian in 2015, Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first trailer for Project Hail Mary, an adaptation of another best-selling novel by Andy Weir. Starring Ryan Gosling, who is stepping into a sci-fi phase after his casting in Star Wars: Starfighter, the film features him as Ryland Grace, a science teacher turned astronaut who awakens aboard a spacecraft with no memory of his identity or why he is stranded light years from Earth.
The trailer opens with a heavily bearded Grace regaining consciousness from a coma on a ship located 11.9 light years from Earth. Through a series of flashbacks, it’s revealed that Earth’s sun—along with countless nearby stars—is dying due to a strange substance, with only one star unaffected. Grace, a reluctant hero with a Doctorate in molecular biology, is recruited as an astronaut to travel to this unique star to uncover what protects it, in a mission to save humanity.
But Earth is not the only planet facing a dying sun, and Grace soon encounters an extraterrestrial ally sent on a similar rescue quest. This mysterious alien is briefly teased in the initial trailer.
The movie is directed and produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creators of the animated Spider-Verse series and the original Lego movie. Drew Goddard, who previously adapted Weir’s The Martian for the screen, wrote the screenplay. Arriving in theaters on March 20, 2026, the film also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub.

Menudo susto.
Wait, Ryan Gosling doing sci-fi? Honestly can't picture it after so many romantic/dramas but I'm cautiously excited. The Martian was a fun ride. The trailer looks more character-focused than I expected, less about big explosions. Hope they keep that 'lonely problem solving in space' vibe from the book. Fingers crossed it doesn't get too generic. 📚🚀
