Relay AI Shutdown: Founder Moves to Google Chrome

Relay, an AI-driven workflow automation platform, has officially shut down. Founder and CEO Jacob Bank, along with select team members, are transitioning to the Google Chrome division. Bank confirmed that paid subscriptions will cease on September 14, while free users lost access starting August 15. The company’s closure was initially announced in July.
Since its 2021 launch, Relay positioned itself as an "AI-powered Zapier," streamlining repetitive business operations like document drafting, editing, and project management. Bank, who joined Google in 2015 after selling his previous startup, Timeful, previously contributed to Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Chat before founding Relay.
Bank will return to Google as Vice President of Chrome Products, overseeing product strategy and developer relations. He emphasized that Chrome is the ideal environment for AI agents, with plans to significantly boost the browser’s task-execution capabilities through advanced AI integration.
This strategic move underscores Google’s commitment to embedding AI across its core ecosystem. Following the integration of Gemini into Search and Chrome, Google continues to expand AI’s role in user experience and web access. With over 1 billion Gemini users reported recently, the addition of Relay’s expertise is expected to accelerate Chrome’s AI agent development.
