Private Cloud Revival: Why Kubernetes and Cloud-Native Tech Are Crucial in the AI Era

Heading to London for the 2025 KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, I had braced myself for signs of decline in this conference dedicated to the art of building, deploying, and managing cutting-edge cloud applications and infrastructures. After all, the event celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, and from my experience, that's often when conferences start to feel a bit dated. Moreover, with all the buzz around AI's impact on application development, and given KubeCon's indirect focus on applications and services, I expected some waning interest.
But, wow, was I ever off the mark! KubeCon 2025 in London was bustling, drawing in over 12,000 attendees. Navigating the throngs at the sprawling London ExCel center sometimes felt like I was Brad Pitt in "World War Z," trying to dodge a relentless wave of zombies. And forget about slipping into any of the keynotes even a tad late; every seat in the main hall and the overflow balconies was snatched up.
What Fuels the Enthusiasm for Core Infrastructure and Cloud Tech?
One reason for the event's success might be that Kubernetes and other core cloud-native technologies seem to be holding up well against the AI wave, especially when compared to traditional application coding. The knowledge shared at KubeCon zeroes in on deployment, management, and integration challenges that demand deep expertise and a solid grasp of complex tech. The fast-evolving nature of cloud-native tech can outpace even the latest AI models, leaving those who rely solely on AI to build systems that are quickly outdated.
Moreover, Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies are crucial for running and developing AI workloads. Many leading systems are built on these infrastructures, with OpenAI, for instance, having used Kubernetes as early as 2016.
Similar to last year, the AI discussions at KubeCon were grounded and practical, focusing on critical areas like automation and analytics, which align with top use cases identified by Aberdeen research.
The Resurgence of Private Cloud
Another notable trend at KubeCon London was the comeback of the private cloud. While it never truly disappeared, its significance had certainly diminished. A couple of years ago, a major tech vendor told me they had stopped mentioning private cloud to clients, shifting their focus entirely to hybrid cloud.
However, during my meetings and demos at KubeCon London, private cloud discussions were back in the spotlight. Two major trends are fueling this revival.
The Rise of AI
Our research at Aberdeen shows that many businesses are now focusing on building small language models or conducting internal inferencing to harness their data for AI purposes. When companies adopt this strategy, they quickly realize the need to safeguard their critical private data, steering clear of public cloud AI and opting instead to build AI infrastructures on private clouds.
Digital Sovereignty
The other driving force behind the private cloud's resurgence, as highlighted in numerous sessions and discussions at KubeCon Europe, is the growing importance of digital sovereignty. With global uncertainties and concerns about who might access their data in clouds worldwide, many businesses and vendors are turning to modernized private cloud infrastructures to maintain data integrity and protect their information.
This trend underscores the renewed significance of the private cloud and the sophistication of its newer implementations. Initially, private clouds were mainly about bringing cloud-based controls to on-premises systems. Now, they offer businesses the agility and flexibility of the cloud, coupled with enhanced control and security.
As companies continue to modernize their infrastructures, protect their data, and leverage technologies like AI, Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies are likely to remain at the forefront. It will be fascinating to see if KubeCon continues to grow and stay relevant at this fall's event in Atlanta.
