Perplexity Debuts $200 Premium Subscription Tier

Perplexity has introduced a new $200 monthly subscription plan for its most demanding users, according to a company blog post published on Tuesday.
The new Perplexity Max plan provides unlimited usage of the startup's data analysis and reporting tool, Labs, along with early access to upcoming features like Perplexity's AI-powered browser, Comet. Max subscribers will also receive priority access to Perplexity services utilizing the latest frontier AI models, including OpenAI's o3-pro and Claude Opus 4.
With the launch of Max, Perplexity becomes the latest AI company to introduce a hyper-premium subscription tier targeting its power users. OpenAI pioneered this approach with its $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro offering, with Google, Anthropic, and Cursor implementing similar high-end subscriptions in recent months.
Perplexity now provides multiple subscription options. In addition to the $200 monthly Max plan, the company offers a consumer Pro plan at $20 per month and an Enterprise Pro plan priced at $40 monthly per user. The startup has indicated it will eventually release a hyper-premium Max plan for enterprise customers as well.
Financial documents reviewed by The Information show that Perplexity generated approximately $34 million in revenue during 2024, primarily from its $20 monthly Pro plan subscriptions, while operating at a $65 million cash burn. The company's significant cash expenditure is reportedly attributed to substantial cloud server costs and payments for AI model access from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Perplexity's business appears to have expanded since last year, with reported annual recurring revenue reaching $80 million in January. However, the startup must substantially increase its revenue to support its current valuation. The company engaged in late-stage funding discussions in May to raise $500 million at a $14 billion valuation, though it remains unclear whether this financing round has been finalized.
Competition in the AI search market continues to intensify for Perplexity. Google has recently aggressively promoted its AI Mode search product, which closely resembles Perplexity's application, to its user base. Meanwhile, OpenAI has deepened search functionality within ChatGPT and is reportedly considering launching its own web browser.
