New Partnership Aims to Advance Women's Cancer Treatment

We're excited to share that technology can truly change the face of healthcare, and it's with this belief that we're thrilled to announce our new partnership with the Institute of Women's Cancers. This institute is a collaborative effort between France's renowned cancer research and treatment center, Institut Curie; Université PSL, France's leading research university; and Inserm, the country's National Institute of Health and Medical Research. Our joint mission is to harness AI tools to enhance cancer research, disseminate valuable health information, and provide funding for postdoctoral researchers. Together, we're setting out to revolutionize the battle against cancer, with a special focus on challenging women's cancers like triple-negative breast cancer.
Meeting the Urgency of the Challenge
The impact of breast and gynecological cancers on women worldwide is profound. In France alone, nearly 60,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, while globally, over 2 million women received this diagnosis in 2022. Cervical cancer, another gynecological cancer, is also a significant concern worldwide. Understanding these complex diseases is crucial for lowering mortality rates, and that's why we're proud to back the Institute of Women's Cancers. With the combined expertise of Institut Curie, Université PSL, and Inserm, the Institute is well-equipped to lead extensive research into the origins, evolution, and unique traits of these cancers.
Applying AI’s Power to Cancer Research
Our partnership brings together Institut Curie's top-tier research and medical expertise with Google's cutting-edge AI capabilities. We aim to use AI tools to predict cancer progression and the likelihood of relapse for individual patients, with the goal of crafting more targeted and effective treatments. We're also delving into the discovery of new biomarkers to identify which patients will respond best to specific therapies, particularly in cases where existing treatments fall short.
Anne Vincent-Salomon, director of the Institute of Women’s Cancers, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, "Combining our research expertise with Google's advanced technological capabilities offers hope for significant advancements in our mission to better understand and predict cancer's progression, and develop more effective treatments."
To support the Institute's holistic approach to cancer care, which integrates postdoctoral researchers, clinicians, sociologists, and economists, we will also offer AI skills training to professionals at the Institute of Women's Cancers and Institut Curie.
Giving the General Public the Right Information
Providing the right information at the right time can significantly improve health outcomes and save lives. That's why we're committed to making health information accessible, understandable, and culturally relevant. YouTube will host and promote Institut Curie's channel, sharing reliable scientific content to combat misinformation, raise awareness about risk factors, and boost screening and follow-up rates. This partnership with Institut Curie is part of our broader commitment to health, alongside other French partners like AP-HP and the Foundation for Medical Research on YouTube.
Fostering Collaboration with the Academic Community
In honor of Marie Curie, a pioneering scientist and two-time Nobel Prize winner who championed global scientific collaboration, Google.org is providing over $2 million in funding to Université PSL to accelerate applied AI scientific research. In addition to our research partnership with the Institute of Women's Cancers, this program will support research by Université PSL postdoctoral fellows using AI to improve breast cancer outcomes. It will also facilitate knowledge sharing between Université PSL and Google Research teams, promoting wider scientific advancement.
Postdoctoral researchers will benefit from the insights and case studies provided by Google researchers, under the guidance of Joëlle Barral, a senior director of Research at Google DeepMind, and Cédric Denis-Rémis, vice president of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development at Université PSL.
With this new partnership, we're eager to leverage technology to deepen our understanding of women's cancers, and to enhance our efforts in treating and preventing them.
