The founder of the open-source AI agent project OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger, has recently addressed rumors, clarifying that the project has never maintained official accounts on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo or Bilibili. Any currently active accounts claiming to be "official" or displaying verification badges are fraudulent.
As a popular open-source project within recent developer communities, OpenClaw is nicknamed "Lobster" by users for its capabilities, including local operation, autonomous file handling, and browser automation. The project's core value lies in enabling "local proxy sovereignty," which grants large language models controlled operating system permissions to perform authentic, complex office tasks.
The incident began in early March 2026 when a Weibo account certified as the "OpenClaw Open Source Community" appeared and quickly garnered interactions from several major domestic AI companies. However, on March 8th, Steinberger explicitly stated via a social platform that he has never held or authorized anyone to operate a Weibo account for the project. Sources suggest the fake account may have used identification materials from personnel associated with the project's China team to pass the platform's verification process.
This impersonation incident highlights vulnerabilities in the verification processes for overseas open-source projects on domestic social platforms. It also reflects a broader trend within the AI industry of hastily chasing trends and vying for ecosystem positioning. As open-source productivity tools become more deeply integrated, the authenticity of information sources and security boundaries have become critical issues the industry must confront.
