GPT-4.1 Debuts in OpenAI's ChatGPT

OpenAI's latest multimodal GPT AI models are now being deployed to ChatGPT. The company announced on Wednesday that GPT-4.1 is accessible across all paid ChatGPT plans and can be selected via the model dropdown menu by Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. Although free users are currently excluded, OpenAI states that Enterprise and Education users will gain entry in the coming weeks.
GPT-4o mini, the cost-effective and performance-focused model released last year, is being replaced by GPT-4.1 mini as the new default option in ChatGPT for all users, including those on free accounts. Paid subscribers will also notice GPT-4o mini replaced by GPT-4.1 mini among the model selection choices.
Both GPT-4.1 and GPT‑4.1 mini are specifically enhanced for coding and instruction adherence, delivering superior performance compared to GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini in all areas, according to OpenAI. The new models feature a one-million-token context window—significantly exceeding GPT-4o’s 128,000-token limit—which determines how much text, image, or video input the AI can interpret. OpenAI also highlights speed upgrades that make GPT-4.1 more suitable for daily coding tasks than the advanced o3 and o4-mini reasoning models introduced earlier this year.
GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini were released to developers last month, alongside GPT-4.1 nano—described by OpenAI as its most compact, fastest, and most affordable model yet. Notably, GPT-4.1 Nano is not part of this rollout, and it remains uncertain when or if it will become generally available in ChatGPT.

GPT-4.1 schon in ChatGPT?
Interesting update! GPT-4.1 rolling out to all paid tiers makes sense for broader testing, but I can't help wondering about the real performance leap over previous versions. Hope the latency is improved – sometimes the speed can be annoying for quick tasks 😅 Anyone else tried it yet for coding or creative writing?
