OpenAI's ChatGPT Desktop App Launches with Chat, Office, and Programming

OpenAI officially announced the launch of a new desktop application that combines the Codex and ChatGPT experiences into a single platform. This move aims to improve the AI-powered coding experience while extending the product's appeal from developers to a wider, non-technical audience.
Following the update, the desktop version of Codex will become a new ChatGPT desktop application featuring three core components: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. The upgraded application will preserve existing Codex tasks and projects, and users can opt to keep the Codex application icon in settings, ensuring a smooth transition.
Each of the three modules serves a distinct purpose, covering everything from chatting to coding within a single interface.
The new application offers clearly defined functions. The Chat module supports asking questions, searching, and interactive conversations, addressing everyday information needs. The Work module is built for knowledge-based tasks such as research, data analysis, and creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites. The Codex module is designed specifically for developers, enabling software development with local files, repositories, terminals, and developer tools. This covers the full workflow from daily communication and office productivity to code writing.
For users who already have the ChatGPT desktop version, launching the app will prompt them to download the new ChatGPT desktop application. Both old and new versions can coexist. The new version is positioned as a completely new application that combines chat, work, and Codex. The old version will be renamed ChatGPT Classic and remain available without requiring migration, continuing to receive model updates, bug fixes, security patches, and support for existing enterprise features. However, OpenAI also notes that new proxy features may only be available in the new application.
Cloud and local data are separated, with a clear synchronization strategy.
Regarding data synchronization, chat history between the ChatGPT web version and desktop application will stay synchronized. However, cloud-based Work conversations will not appear in the desktop version's Work section. Threads and local files in the desktop version's Work will remain on the original computer. This design ensures cross-device consistency for chat data while also addressing the need for local file security and privacy in work scenarios.
From the ChatGPT desktop version to Codex and now to this "three-in-one" application, OpenAI is accelerating the integration of fragmented AI capabilities into a single entry point.
