OpenAI has just announced the rollout of GPT-5.5Instant, now set as the default version of ChatGPT and fully replacing GPT-5.3Instant. As the primary model handling billions of daily user interactions, this update—despite its "instant" label—delivers meaningful performance improvements.
According to OpenAI, the new version focuses on three key areas: greater accuracy, more concise responses, and a more personalized user experience.
Saying Goodbye to "Hallucinations": Strong Performance in Math and Professional Fields
Accuracy is one of the most closely watched areas, and GPT-5.5Instant delivers strong results. Test data shows the new model reduced hallucination rates by 52.5% in high-stakes fields like medicine, law, and finance. When addressing logical errors previously flagged by users, the correction rate improved by nearly 40%.
In academic benchmarks, the model scored 81.2 on the AIME2025 math test, well above the previous version's 65.4. It also showed notable gains in GPQA doctoral-level science tests, multimodal reasoning, and scientific chart interpretation. In an algebra example shared by OpenAI, the new model no longer simply declares answers correct or incorrect—it identifies specific calculation errors in the user's reasoning.
Less Wordy, More Human: A Conversational Style with Fewer Unnecessary Responses
Beyond its cognitive improvements, GPT-5.5Instant also has a new personality. It no longer overuses formatting and emojis, and its response style is noticeably simpler. In tests, response length and line count dropped by about 30%, and the tone feels more like a natural conversation between friends than a rigid manual.
For Plus and Pro subscribers, the model now features improved long-term memory and cross-platform data integration. It offers more personalized recommendations based on past conversations and connected Gmail data. For example, when suggesting restaurants, it doesn't just list popular spots—it matches options to your taste preferences and frequent locations.

Interestingly, alongside the model launch, OpenAI is planning a special party at 5:55 PM local time on May 5th. According to founder Altman, nearly every detail—from the timing to the agenda—was designed by GPT-5.5 itself. The model even suggested ceremonial elements like "short remarks," "human speeches," and "collecting feedback for version 5.6."
