According to a report from The Information, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed staff in an internal memo that the company's next-generation AI model, internally codenamed "Spud," has finished its pre-training phase. Altman highlighted the model's outstanding capabilities and stated it is slated for release in the next few weeks, a development poised to substantially boost the global economy. He stressed that the rate of technological progress is surpassing forecasts, placing the company at a pivotal moment in its pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Alongside this core model upgrade, OpenAI is implementing a major strategic refocus and internal reorganization. The product division led by Fidji Simo has been officially rebranded as "AGI Deployment," with the goal of speeding up the conversion of research into real-world applications. To secure the necessary computational resources for "Spud" and other top-priority initiatives, OpenAI has made the decision to sunset its flagship video generation tool, Sora. This step signals the company's strategic pivot away from resource-heavy creative applications toward high-efficiency productivity tools.
OpenAI currently faces intense competition from rivals like Anthropic, which has captured market share with enterprise-focused agent systems such as Claude Code. In response, OpenAI is developing a desktop-centric "super app" built on the "Spud" architecture. This integrated platform will combine ChatGPT, the coding agent Codex, and the browser Atlas. This strategy is designed to overcome the limitations of existing products like Codex in the intelligent agent arena. By creating a unified interface, OpenAI aims to reclaim its leadership position in the enterprise AI market.
