As AI image generators become more widespread and sophisticated online, distinguishing real images from fakes has never been more challenging. On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled two new measures to tackle this issue.
The company has adopted the open C2PA standard, which embeds a clear signal in metadata indicating that an image was AI-generated. Additionally, OpenAI is collaborating with Google to incorporate an invisible watermark named SynthID—designed to be more difficult to detect and even harder to remove if malicious actors attempt to conceal their tracks.
These protections currently apply only to images generated by OpenAI’s own products, so they won’t stem the tide of imagery from less reputable AI tools. However, they help ensure that OpenAI itself does not contribute to the problem.
OpenAI has also previewed a public verification tool that checks for both signals, enabling users to easily test whether an image was AI-generated. Initially, the tool will only work for images created by OpenAI products, but the company hopes to eventually extend it to other tools.
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), founded in 2021, is a non-profit organization focused on reducing the harmful impact of AI-generated imagery on public discourse. The C2PA standard has been adopted by various Google products, but industry-wide adoption remains inconsistent. Since the C2PA signal is easily accessible in each file’s metadata, it can be manipulated, making it most effective among trusted users.
SynthID is a newer initiative designed to provide a more robust defense against tampering. Developed by Google, the SynthID watermark is engineered to persist even when malicious actors try to remove it via screenshots, resizing, or digital manipulation.
The two systems are intended to complement each other, with each addressing the other’s limitations.
"Watermarking is more durable through transformations like screenshots, while metadata can provide richer information than a watermark alone," OpenAI noted in its announcement. "Together, they make provenance more resilient than either layer would be on its own."
