Leading AI company OpenAI has recently adjusted its ambitious "Stargate" infrastructure strategy. According to sources, the company is moving away from constructing its own large-scale data centers toward a more flexible model of leasing computing power.

Strategy shifts from direct construction to indirect leasing
OpenAI is now securing the necessary computing resources through a series of major bilateral deals to meet its growing needs. This change means the company will scale back its investment in building its own capacity, instead accessing hardware support indirectly through its partners' infrastructure.
Specifically, OpenAI will still use the original "Stargate" data center site resources in Norway. However, these will be supplied through an indirect chain of "Nscale → Microsoft → OpenAI," rather than being operated directly by OpenAI itself.
Microsoft assumes key campus support for expansion
Meanwhile, as a core partner, Microsoft is actively taking over and supporting infrastructure projects affected by this strategic shift. Microsoft has confirmed it will assume control of the second phase of Crusoe Company's Abilene campus in Texas, which was initially planned as the first expansion site for the "Stargate" project.
This adjustment highlights the AI industry's shift toward more pragmatic approaches under significant energy and financial constraints. By adopting a leasing model, OpenAI can maintain its technological edge while rapidly accessing world-class computing resources globally.
