As AI technology advances rapidly, OpenAI has released a new official prompt guide for its latest GPT-5.5 model. The key message: developers should move away from the lengthy, detailed instructions written for older models and adopt a more concise, results-focused communication style.
Old Instructions Are Now Performance Bottlenecks
OpenAI warns that directly migrating old prompts to GPT-5.5 can backfire. Previously, because models had limited reasoning, developers had to provide very detailed step-by-step instructions. Now, those extra descriptions restrict the model's search space, resulting in rigid and mechanical responses.
The official recommendation is to build instructions from scratch, including only the target output, success criteria, and essential constraints. Rather than specifying every step, tell the model directly: "Solve this problem. What are the success criteria?" This lets the model leverage its improved reasoning to find the optimal path independently.
Role Definition Regains Central Importance
Interestingly, "role definition" — once a controversial topic in the prompt community — has regained official endorsement in the GPT-5.5 era. OpenAI suggests a seven-part prompt structure, with "role definition" at the top to establish the model's identity and responsibilities.
Additionally, to reduce perceived latency during streaming output, the guide recommends adding a "greeting" mechanism — sending one or two confirmation messages before executing complex tasks. This deep optimization for GPT-5.5 enhances both the model's logical accuracy and the overall user experience.
