OpenAI Memo Mocks Anthropic Over Computing Power Shortage

A recent CNBC report reveals that OpenAI openly took a jab at its longtime rival Anthropic in an investor memo. OpenAI claims Anthropic is falling behind in computing power and struggling with severe resource limitations, and the gap is only growing.
Computing Power Gap Widens Further
In the memo, OpenAI outlined an aggressive expansion plan to boost its computing capacity to 30 gigawatts by 2030. In contrast, OpenAI estimates Anthropic will only achieve 7 to 8 gigawatts by the end of 2027, meaning its growth rate lags far behind—even at the most optimistic projection.
The disparity reflects contrasting strategic approaches. OpenAI has pursued an aggressive infrastructure expansion, using a "compounding advantage" to lower costs and improve model intelligence. Anthropic, on the other hand, is viewed as taking a more cautious investment path, leaving it at a disadvantage in the race for computational resources.
Race to a $1 Trillion IPO
The combined valuation of these two AI powerhouses now tops $1 trillion, and both are actively advancing their IPO plans. OpenAI argues that superior infrastructure translates into better cost efficiency per unit of intelligence, giving it the ability to offer free tools to hundreds of millions of users while still generating higher revenue from premium offerings.
Meanwhile, Anthropic—founded by former OpenAI executives—is also targeting the enterprise market, having recently released a new model and a cybersecurity initiative. However, OpenAI maintains that without adequate computing power and resources, its rival will struggle to sustain long-term commercial viability against pressure from tech giants like Google and Meta.
