OpenAI launches ChatGPT canvas tool for coders and writers. Here's how it works

Have you ever marveled at how ChatGPT can whip up impressive code and text? It's no secret that these generative AI capabilities are a hit among users. But what if you could take your experience to the next level? OpenAI seems to think so, and they've rolled out a game-changer: Canvas.
On a crisp Thursday, OpenAI unveiled Canvas, a fresh interface that pops up in its own window, streamlining your journey of collaboration on writing and coding projects with ChatGPT. This isn't just another feature; it's a whole new level of assistance:
We’re introducing canvas, a new way of working with ChatGPT to write and code.
Canvas lets you create & refine your ideas side by side with ChatGPT — giving you control to directly edit, indicate where ChatGPT should focus, and get targeted suggestions.https://t.co/NCh0PkOKHJ

Ever found yourself in the tedious loop of revising your work with ChatGPT? It can be a real hassle when your initial upload gets buried under layers of edits and questions in the chat. But worry not! Canvas changes the game by allowing you to keep the ChatGPT interface right next to your project. This way, you can ask questions and keep the conversation flowing without losing your place. And when you open Canvas on your project, you'll find handy shortcuts for both writing and coding that can execute tasks with a single click.
When it comes to writing, Canvas offers shortcuts that can suggest edits, tweak the length, adjust reading levels, sprinkle in some emojis, and even give your work that "final polish" by checking for grammar, clarity, and consistency. Just take a look at the image at the top of this story to see it in action! On the coding side, you can use shortcuts to review code, insert logs, add comments, squash bugs, and even translate your code to another language.
One of the coolest features? You can highlight specific sections of your project that you want help with, and Canvas will spring into action. It automatically pops up when ChatGPT senses you could use some assistance, but you can also manually summon it through the toggle picker under "ChatGPT 4o with Canvas".
OpenAI designed Canvas to be your creative sidekick, and their research team has fine-tuned it to rewrite documents, offer inline critiques, generate various content types, and much more.
Currently, Canvas is in early beta and available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users. A ChatGPT Plus membership will set you back $20/month, but it comes with extra goodies like Voice Mode and unlimited image generations. If you're an Enterprise or Edu user, you'll get your hands on Canvas next week, while free users will have to wait a bit longer until it's out of beta.
