HomeOpenAI Embraces Anthropic's AI Data Connection Standard
OpenAI is now supporting Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) across its products, including the ChatGPT desktop app. In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that this open-source standard, which helps AI models generate more relevant responses, is already available in the Agents SDK, with support coming soon for the ChatGPT desktop app and Responses API.
"MCP is loved by users, and we're thrilled to integrate it into our products," Altman stated. "It's available now in the Agents SDK, and support for the ChatGPT desktop app and Responses API is on its way!"
MCP allows AI models to access data from various sources like business tools, software, content repositories, and app development environments. This protocol facilitates the creation of two-way connections between data sources and AI-driven applications, such as chatbots. Developers can set up "MCP servers" to expose data and build "MCP clients" like apps and workflows that connect to these servers as needed. Since Anthropic made MCP open source, companies like Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph have started supporting MCP on their platforms.
Anthropic's chief product officer, Mike Krieger, expressed his excitement about OpenAI's adoption of MCP on X, saying, "It's great to see the MCP love spreading to OpenAI – welcome aboard! MCP has become a thriving open standard with thousands of integrations and it's still growing. Large language models are most effective when they can connect to the data and software you're already using."
OpenAI plans to provide more details about its MCP initiatives in the coming months.
