Following the disbanding of the "Super Alignment" team last year, OpenAI's safety and mission structure has seen another major shift. Platformer, in an exclusive report confirmed by TechCrunch, reveals that OpenAI has formally dissolved its "Mission Alignment" team, a group created to steward the company's core purpose and evaluate AI's broader societal impact.
Coinciding with this move, former team lead and prominent researcher Josh Achiam has taken on a new role as the company's inaugural **"Chief Futurist"**.
Restructuring Safety: From a Dedicated Team to a "Distributed" Function
Established in September 2024, the "Mission Alignment" team had a central mandate to "ensure artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity."
Team's Future: An OpenAI spokesperson explained the dissolution as part of a regular reorganization to keep pace with the company's fast growth. The team's six to seven members have been moved into other roles across the organization, where they are said to be continuing related work.
Strategic Signal: Industry observers interpret this as OpenAI transitioning its "safety" oversight from a centralized, standalone unit into a "distributed" responsibility integrated across its various product and research divisions.
Chief Futurist: A New Position with New Priorities
In a recent blog update, Achiam outlined that his new position will concentrate on long-term strategic research, collaborating closely with physicist Jason Pruet from the technical staff.
