OpenAI Finalizes Acquisition of Jony Ive's io to Develop AI Hardware

OpenAI has finalized its acquisition of the hardware startup io, co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, in a deal valued at nearly $6.5 billion, the company announced Wednesday. The announcement deliberately refers to the company solely as io Products Inc.
The initial blog post announcing the acquisition was temporarily removed from OpenAI's website following a trademark dispute with Iyo, a hearing technology company that originated within Google's research division.
The post has since been restored, now including an updated statement: "We are excited to announce that the team at io Products, Inc. has officially joined OpenAI. Jony Ive and his design firm LoveFrom continue to operate independently while taking on significant design and creative leadership roles across OpenAI's initiatives."
OpenAI first revealed the deal and its vision for specialized AI hardware with a social media video featuring CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive. That video was removed from the company's digital channels due to the legal proceedings and has not been reposted. According to the blog post, "The io team, dedicated to creating inspiring and empowering products, will now integrate with OpenAI to collaborate closely with research, engineering, and product teams in San Francisco."
