OpenAI CEO Altman Cancels South Korea and Japan Visit Following the Birth of His Second Daughter
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently welcomed his second daughter, who was born prematurely, prompting the cancellation of his planned trip to South Korea and Japan scheduled for the 15th. While industry observers had speculated that the itinerary change might be linked to a U.S. government investigation into OpenAI or the imminent launch of a new large language model, recent disclosures confirm the delay was solely due to family matters, highlighting the strong emphasis on work-life balance within Silicon Valley.

Under the original schedule, Altman’s visit was designed to strengthen strategic ties with major South Korean technology firms. He was set to meet with leadership from Samsung Electronics, NAVER, and Kakao to discuss AI collaboration strategies and deliver a keynote on generative AI advancements and industry trends to Samsung staff. In his absence, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, Mark Chen, will now represent the company at the OpenAI South Korea Developer event on the 15th.
As global AI competition intensifies, tech leaders such as NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang have recently visited South Korea to bolster partnerships. The industry anticipates that Altman will reschedule his visit soon. OpenAI continues to maintain active collaborations with Samsung Electronics, SK Group, Kakao, and the South Korean government. Despite this postponement of high-level engagements, the long-term strategic alignment between both parties in supply chain and computing infrastructure remains unchanged, driven by the interconnected nature of the global AI ecosystem.
