Jason Ginsberg, the lead behind Notion Mail, shared with TechCrunch that the goal isn't to simply bolt AI onto an existing inbox but to enable users to construct a personalized email experience. "The way we built Notion Mail is almost down to the building blocks, or the fundamentals of how email works," Ginsberg explained. "It's really modular... you actually can configure Notion Mail in ways we can't even imagine."

Notion Mail's backbone comes from Skiff, an end-to-end encrypted collaboration platform acquired by Notion in 2024. Ginsberg, a co-founder of Skiff, brings his expertise to Notion Mail, which he envisions as a tool to help users categorize emails into "views" or folders using Notion AI. This feature allows for auto-labeling and sorting emails by topic, making it easier to manage job applications, customer feedback, or any other specific purpose.

Integration with Notion's Ecosystem

Notion Mail doesn't stand alone; it's deeply integrated with other Notion products like Notion Calendar and the internal knowledge base. This connectivity offers time-saving shortcuts, such as automatically checking your calendar and suggesting meeting times directly from email conversations.

Ginsberg believes that while much of the focus in AI-enhanced email has been on writing, Notion Mail stands out by emphasizing inbox organization. "Our focus has really been on, how can AI help organize your email for you?" he said. "It's no longer feeling like a burden... Our focus is not to have you work faster in the old way of things. It's really a new way and a new approach."

Looking Ahead

Notion has big plans for Notion Mail, including more product integrations and new access methods like an iOS app. The team also aims to introduce multiple inboxes within a single view, further enhancing the customization and efficiency of the email experience.
