Netflix announced on Thursday morning that it has acquired InterPositive, a filmmaking technology startup founded in 2022 by actor Ben Affleck.
The move is consistent with Netflix's strategic use of generative AI in film production. The company has previously employed AI for visual effects in original content and has told investors it is "exceptionally well-positioned to harness the ongoing evolution of AI."
In a statement, Affleck explained that he started contemplating AI's role in the future of filmmaking back in 2022. His goal was to "preserve the human essence of storytelling, which is judgment," and to "safeguard the power of human creativity."
InterPositive is not focused on creating AI actors or synthetic performances. Instead, the company developed a model that assists production teams by working with their own footage to facilitate post-production edits. This includes fixing continuity errors, adjusting lighting, or enhancing environmental details.
"Our intensive R&D resulted in our first model, designed to grasp visual logic and editorial consistency while adhering to cinematic principles, even when tackling real-world production issues like missing shots, background replacement, or incorrect lighting," Affleck wrote.
"We also incorporated safeguards to protect creative intent. These tools enable responsible experimentation while leaving artistic choices firmly with the creators—ensuring the technology ultimately serves the story being told."
As part of the agreement, Affleck will join Netflix as a senior advisor. Financial details of the deal were not made public.
"Our AI philosophy has always centered on meaningfully supporting the creative community and our members," stated Elizabeth Stone, Netflix's Chief Product and Technology Officer. "The InterPositive team is joining Netflix because we share a core belief: innovation should empower storytellers, not displace them."
