Musk's xAI and Tesla Unveil Macrohard and Digital Optimus Projects
In a recent post on X, Elon Musk revealed that xAI and Tesla are jointly developing an AI initiative, tentatively called "Macrohard" (a lighthearted nod to Microsoft) or "Digital Optimus". Stemming from Tesla's initial investment agreement with xAI, this represents their first major collaborative project.

The system functions as an artificial intelligence "digital agent", designed to monitor a user's screen activity and the last five seconds of keyboard/mouse input in real-time, delivering rapid, human-like responses. It employs a dual-brain architecture: xAI's Grok model serves as the "navigator" or "brain" (akin to advanced, deliberative System 2 thinking), overseeing overall command, world understanding, and strategy. Conversely, Tesla's AI agent acts as the "intuition system" (System 1), processing real-time screen content and input for swift, instinctive reactions.
Musk highlighted that the system will operate on Tesla's affordable AI hardware (the AI4 chip, priced at just $650), combined with xAI's efficient use of Nvidia computing power, resulting in a remarkably low total cost. He claims no other company currently offers a comparable real-time intelligent AI system. This technology, Musk stated, can in principle simulate the operations of an entire company, unlocking the potential for "full corporate automation"—hence the playful "Macrohard" name as a tribute to Microsoft.
This project is viewed as a significant step toward achieving comprehensive, enterprise-level AI automation and could reshape the traditional software industry. Specifics are still being finalized, and its development warrants close attention.
