Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, has recently faced a significant wave of departures, with multiple founding team members exiting. Musk has taken note of this trend, expressing his disappointment and acknowledging flaws in the company's initial setup.
Reports indicate that Zhang Guodong, who led image generation products, resigned last Thursday. Co-founder Liu Haotian also confirmed his departure on social media, citing burnout. Shortly after, it was reported that Dai Zihang had also left xAI. Currently, only two founders, Manuel Kroyes and Ross Nodin, remain with the company.
Musk stated that xAI was not properly constructed from the outset and is now undergoing a complete rebuild. He mentioned that many skilled candidates were unable to join xAI in recent years, a situation he finds regrettable. Musk and the head of recruitment are reviewing past interview records in hopes of reconnecting with top-performing applicants from that time.
Despite the talent drain, Musk continues to attract new expertise. This week, he announced the successful recruitment of two executives from the AI programming tools startup Cursor. Concurrently, Musk admitted that xAI lags in the programming domain, an area where rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic have made substantial progress.
While restructuring the team, Musk is also shaping xAI's future in the capital markets. In January, xAI was valued at $20 billion; following a merger with SpaceX, its valuation rose to $250 billion. Furthermore, Musk revealed that Tesla will launch the "Digital Optimus" project, expected to be available for user testing within six months. The project aims to develop a real-time intelligent AI system capable of assisting car owners with office tasks, particularly when they are away from the vehicle.
Musk emphasized that "Digital Optimus" will be a deeply understanding AI system, processing user operations in real time. In the future, numerous Digital Optimus units will be deployed at Tesla Superchargers, delivering robust computing power.
