Microsoft's Copilot Vision Now Free for All Edge Users: Here's How It Works

Looking for an AI that can dive into the details of your current web page, offering summaries and answering your queries? Microsoft's Copilot Vision feature might just be what you're after. In a recent Bluesky post, Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, shared the exciting news: Copilot Vision is now rolling out to all Edge users for free. Initially an experimental feature from last October, it expanded to a preview for Copilot Pro subscribers in December. Now, as long as you've got a Microsoft account, you're good to go.

"Copilot Vision is out now, free in Edge," Suleyman announced. "It can literally see what you see on screen (if you opt in). Pretty amazing! It'll think out loud with you when you're browsing online. No more over-explaining, copy-pasting, or struggling to put something into words."

What's so special about Copilot Vision?

With the power of AI, Copilot Vision scans and interprets the web page you're viewing in Edge. It can describe what it sees, summarize the content, and even respond to your questions or requests about the page. Imagine opening an Amazon product page and asking Copilot to suggest the best item tailored to your needs, or navigating a cooking site and getting a walkthrough of a recipe, or perusing job listings and getting tips on crafting the perfect cover letter for a specific role.

Copilot Vision works across most websites, though it steers clear of harmful or adult content. If you land on an unsupported site, you'll see a grayed-out icon with crossed eyeglasses, and Copilot won't engage with the content.

Addressing privacy concerns, Microsoft ensures that your requests and any images or page content aren't logged or stored. Only Copilot's responses are logged for safety monitoring, and all data is wiped after the session ends.

How to try Copilot Vision

To give Copilot Vision a whirl, make sure you're signed into Edge with your Microsoft account. Click on this link for Copilot Vision in Edge and follow the prompts. In the Copilot sidebar, hit the microphone icon. The first time, you'll need to accept browsing with Copilot Vision. Once you've done that, you're all set.

Open any web page you want analyzed. In the Copilot sidebar, click the microphone icon again and then the glasses icon. Now you can ask Copilot to analyze or summarize the page, ask questions, seek advice, or request content based on the page's information.

Sounds like a cool feature, right?

It would be, if it worked smoothly. I tried activating Copilot Vision in Edge with my personal Microsoft account, but I kept hitting a snag. Every time I tried, Edge would show a "One moment…" message that never seemed to resolve. I tested it on different computers with various Microsoft accounts, but the issue persisted. A writer at The Verge also encountered the same problem. Hopefully, it's just teething issues as the tool becomes more widely available. Copilot Vision definitely has potential, but you might need to wait a bit if you run into the same glitch I did.
