Microsoft Delays Recall Launch, Seeks Windows Insiders' Assistance Amid Security Concerns

Microsoft has once again hit the brakes on its much-talked-about Recall feature due to ongoing security worries. In a recent update to their blog post on Thursday, the tech giant announced that Recall won't be rolling out as a preview on Copilot+ PCs on June 18 as originally planned. Instead, they're shifting gears to make it available first to the Windows Insiders community. While the feature will eventually find its way to all Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft is taking a cautious approach.
"Recall will now shift from a preview experience broadly available for Copilot+ PCs on June 18, 2024, to a preview available first in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks," Microsoft stated in their updated blog post. They emphasized their commitment to incorporating feedback from the Windows Insider Community, saying, "Following receiving feedback on Recall from our Windows Insider Community, as we typically do, we plan to make Recall (preview) available for all Copilot+ PCs coming soon."
What is the Recall Feature?
Back in May, Microsoft introduced Recall with grand promises of revolutionizing how users interact with their PCs. The feature essentially takes a snapshot of your computer every five seconds, allowing you to revisit past activities like old messages or closed browser tabs. It was set to launch across the new Copilot+ PCs starting June 18.
Security Concerns and Microsoft's Response
However, shortly after its unveiling, security researchers uncovered a critical flaw. Even though Windows 11 PCs are encrypted by default when locked, once unlocked, the drive and its files become accessible. This vulnerability extended to Recall, meaning anyone with device and user-level access could potentially view all the owner's activities in plain text by analyzing Recall logs.
In response, Microsoft quickly acknowledged the concerns raised by the security community. They promised to introduce safeguards such as an opt-in requirement for Recall saving, mandatory use of Windows Hello's biometric features to unlock the device, and additional encryption layers to protect Recall saves.
Despite these planned enhancements, Microsoft has now delayed the broader rollout of Recall beyond June 18. The exact timeline for when the feature will be available to Windows Insiders remains vague, as the company's recent blog post was noncommittal on specifics.
Microsoft's Commitment to Security
Microsoft insists that their primary focus remains on user security. "We are adjusting the release model for Recall to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security," the company explained. They added, "This decision is rooted in our commitment to providing a trusted, secure and robust experience for all customers and to seek additional feedback prior to making the feature available to all Copilot+ PC users."

Microsoft's delay on the Recall feature is frustrating, but I get it, security first! 🔒 It's good they're involving Windows Insiders to help. Just hope it doesn't take too long to roll out. Come on, Microsoft, we need this feature!
