According to a report by The Information on April 13, Microsoft is preparing a significant strategic overhaul of its 365 Copilot. A newly formed team, spearheaded by Corporate Vice President Omar Shahine, is investigating how to integrate core technology from the open-source AI agent, OpenClaw. The goal is to evolve Copilot from a reactive conversational assistant into an autonomous AI agent capable of operating continuously and managing complex, multi-step tasks.
This shift centers on embedding OpenClaw's underlying logic into enterprise-level applications. OpenClaw's operational model focuses on achieving deep control over computer systems. This grants the AI the ability to independently execute actions, much like a human user, by obtaining access and control rights within specific software.
Microsoft envisions that the next-generation Copilot will proactively monitor and intervene in workflows in the background, moving beyond a model that only responds to discrete user commands. Potential applications include: Copilot monitoring Outlook emails and calendars in real-time to automatically generate a daily task list each morning; or, within Excel, the AI organizing and processing related data sets in the background while a user is actively working on a separate worksheet.
