HomeMeta to Integrate Midjourney AI-Generated Images into User Feeds
Meta is teaming up with Midjourney to license their visual design technology for use in its own AI models and products, the company’s new Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang announced on Friday. The collaboration includes “technical cooperation between our research teams,” Wang noted, suggesting the partnership goes beyond simply integrating Midjourney’s existing tools across Meta’s platforms.
Wang did not disclose the detailed terms of the arrangement. Meta spokesperson Ashley Gabriel declined to comment and referred to Wang’s posts. Midjourney did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.
Meta has intensified its focus on AI "superintelligence" lately, aiming to close the gap with competitors such as OpenAI and Google. Mark Zuckerberg has taken a personal role in recruiting AI researchers from other firms with highly competitive offers — Wang himself joined Meta after the company acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI, the firm he co-founded, for $14.3 billion.
The Midjourney collaboration supports Meta's broader ambitions for AI-generated imagery throughout its ecosystem. The Meta AI app, for instance, centers on a feed populated with AI-generated images and videos. Facebook has introduced a button that lets users create AI images when composing new posts. AI image generation options are also integrated into chats on WhatsApp and Instagram.
Midjourney gained recognition for its sophisticated AI image and video generation capabilities. As Meta continues enhancing features like its Meta AI social feed, it's reasonable to assume the company will lean on Midjourney's technology to help users produce more polished and appealing photos and videos.
“We hold Midjourney in high regard,” Wang stated. “They have demonstrated remarkable achievements in both technology and aesthetics, and we’re excited to deepen our collaboration.” The two companies plan to share updates on their joint work in the near future.
Despite the partnership, Midjourney remains “an independent, community-supported research lab” with “no investors,” according to its founder and CEO David Holz.
